2007-12-05

An engagement ring or a wedding ring is a ring worn by a woman on her left-hand ring finger indicating her engagement to be married. By modern convention, the ring is usually presented as a betrothal gift by a man to his prospective bride while or directly after she accepts his marriage proposal. It represents a formal agreement to chastity and a future marriage. It was originated in the ancient Greeks, Romans, and even Egyptians. But nowadays we hardly find couples who follow this tradition.

A lady may ignore or refuse the engagement ring presented to her by her lover. This means that she does not want to marry him. But if she accepts the engagement ring then it means that she is ready to marry him.

Engagement rings are very expensive. It could cost a man's two or even three months salary to buy the ring. There are also engagement rings which are cheaper. But in order to impress and prove the seriousness of his intentions, they gift their beloved the expensive ones.

Gold is the most popular material used in the wedding ring. Gold can be 14 karat gold, 18 karat gold, and 24 karat gold. Out of these three options, 24 karat gold is the type that is most recommended for wedding rings. 18 karat gold is rarely used in wedding rings because it is prone to scratches and also it is a softer metal.

"Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend" so goes the old saying. Diamond is no doubt considered as the perfect representation of the marriage bond. Silver is also used in the creation of engagement rings. It is also prone to discolorations and scratches but it is still a popular choice because of its relatively low cost. Platinum is another metal which is also used in the creation of engagement rings. But its price is somewhat precious. Wedding rings made from these different metals adds a different style to the wedding rings.

One should be very careful in choosing an engagement ring because it is meant to wear for a lifetime. Thus one should be very careful while choosing the material of the ring as well as the size of the ring. It would be advisable to take some advice from friends and fiancee before buying the wedding ring.
